As the newest optometrist working at Optique, I often get questions from patients about myself; so I want to take the time to let you all know some more about who I am outside of the office.
One of the most common questions I get from patients is the standard “where are you from”, often followed by “why do you say northern phrases with a southern accent while living in Texas?” The answer requires a little explanation. I was born outside of Philadelphia, and lived there until I was about ten. I then lived in Richmond, Virginia for about three years before moving to Marietta, Georgia which a suburb of Atlanta. I stayed local for college, and moved a short distance away to Athens to go to the University of Georgia. I am glad that the Longhorns do not compete against UGA because it would be tough for me to hide my true college allegiance here in Austin! For graduate school, I moved to Memphis, Tennessee where I had five years full of blues music and BBQ. During my last year of grad school, I took a long weekend trip to Austin out of curiosity, and by the end of the trip, there was no doubt in my mind that this was the place for me to settle after school. I moved to Austin in 2012, and it is one of the best decisions I ever made. The combination of music and outdoors activities with a general laid back atmosphere made it impossible to resist, and I’m happy to now call it “home”.
Music has always been one of the most important things in my life. From a very young age I began playing the viola in classical settings, and I have played in various orchestral settings for years. I play guitar, and hope to learn bluegrass banjo. Even more so than playing music, I have always had a huge interest in all kinds of live and recorded music. The combination of Athens, Memphis and Austin has given me an incredible opportunity to experience many different kinds of music and venues. I have always been interested in any music I could get my hands on, and in college I started a small record collection that has now grown to over 400 albums. It’s not unusual for me to take a few hours on a weekend to sift through some the great Austin record stores and add to my collection.
I try to take full advantage of all that the Austin music scene has to offer, and love to take in shows at our amazing local venues. Every year, I try to make it to a large music festival in order to get as much music in a small amount of time. To date I have been to Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Pitchfork, Beale Street Music Festival, Allgood, Delfest Bluegrass Festival and of course that Austin triple threat of SXSW, Fun Fun Fun and Austin City Limits. If you have a band with a show coming up, I’d love to check it out!
Hopefully this gives you all a little better sense of me outside of work. I love talking with patients and have met a ton of interesting people with common interests while working at Optique.
I hope you keep following to see what all of us at Optique are up to and why we love being a part of the great Austin culture.
